I was born in Madison, Wisconsin and grew up in Ontario, Canada. I hold an electrical engineering degree from Stanford University and a MBA from UCLA. My wife Tina and I have lived in Palo Alto’s Downtown North neighborhood for 27 years now. Our two boys went through the entire PAUSD school system -- Addison, Jordan and Paly -- where they had good experiences and went on to Caltech and Brandeis.
I worked for 27 years in the semiconductor industry, including 16 years at Cadence Design Systems, where I was a corporate vice president, and five years as CEO of Ciranova, a chip-design software company. I'm currently on the boards of two technology startups. I have substantial operating experience leading organizations and complex initiatives -- and I know how to manage a budget.
On the Council, I currently serve as Vice Mayor. I've spent four years on the Finance Committee, including two as Chair. I also sit on the City/School Liaison Committee and the Council-Appointed Officers Committee, and I've been Council liaison to the Parks and Recreation Committee, the Utilities Advisory Committee, and Palo Alto Neighbors Abroad.
Tina and I are dedicated environmentalists and long-standing members of many conservation groups including the Natural Resources Defense Council, the World Wildlife Fund, and the Ocean Conservancy. (Shameless plug: our current favorite environmental advocacy is the Tucson-based Center for Biological Diversity, http://www.biologicaldiversity.org/, which aggressively sues the Federal Government to enforce its environmental laws. Check them out -- if there were ever a time for this kind of work ...)
Finally, I am an avid cyclist, and when I'm not doing anything else you can often find me on my bike in the beautiful foothills above the Peninsula.
"Eric was one of the best-respected and most capable executives we had --- the right balance of strategic thinking and action"
Charlie Huang, Senior Vice President, Cadence Design Systems
